The data measuring constructions of Rijkswaterstaat that are located on the water often have an energy supply consisting of solar panels, batteries and a charge controller. This collection and storage of energy is necessary to enable the energy consumption of the sensors and the data collection installation throughout the year. However, it happens that there are few hours of sunshine in the winter period, so that the batteries are charged scarcely during that period. An alternative to generate and collect power through solar panels can be a “small” wind turbine. There is usually a chance that if the sun is not shining, there is wind, making the wind turbine a nice addition to the existing energy supply.
Commisioned by Rijkswaterstaat, Marine Systems has mounted an axial wind turbine on the data measuring construction at Yerseke. With this project, Marine Systems and Rijkswaterstaat will gain experience with this type of wind turbine. It is possible that this method of generating energy will be rolled out further when the test is experienced in a positive way. To be able to test the wind turbine, the following activities has taken place:
- Construct folding mast for turbine;
- Mounting lubrication system;
- Assembling electrical box;
- Mounting parts on turbine;
- Mounting the turbine on location and testing and commissioning with the help of a work vessel.
Throughout the year 2023, the amount of generated energy, in combination with the measured and collected wind speeds, will be monitored. During the monitoring, the following parameters are obtained remotely in real time:
- Battery voltage;
- Energy consumption;
- Charging status turbine;
- Charging status solar panels.
Based on monitoring and maintenance on location, the results are structurally reported to the client.
