Marine Systems developed and realized a winch reel unit on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat. The development, realization and delivery of this winch reel unit is part of a larger agreement. In 2025 three more winch reel units are being built.

The winch reel unit consists of an umbilical winch, a hose winch and a ‘meetvis’ which is assembled in a compact frame which is easy to transport. With the help of this mobile sampling unit, we enable Rijkswaterstaat to take water samples and perform quality measurements. The unit is capable of carrying out these activities at sea and inland waters to a depth of 100 meters. The winch reel unit is intended for a specific Rijkswaterstaat ship. However this winch reel unit can be exchanged with the winch reel units that we still have to build which are intended for other ships.

The scope of the project is very extensive and includes the following activities:

  • Mechanical engineering;
  • Electrical engineering;
  • Software engineering;
  • Production and assembly of the frame;
  • Production of the electric pots;
  • Production and installation of the electrical box and associated components;
  • Commissioning the winch reel unit;
  • An extensive test phase in the workshop;
  • Executing the FAT;
  • Executing the SAT.

During the engineering phase, the customer and Marine Systems defined the wishes and requirements in several meetings. Marine Systems took these as input for the current design.

Marine Systems has matched and connected the software of the winch reel unit to the software of the laboratory containers so that the winch reel unit can be operated by the operator from the laboratory container.  Marine Systems has developed and realized the laboratory containers, centrifuge containers and a customised refrigerated container for Rijkswaterstaat.

After successfully completing the FAT and SAT, Rijkswaterstaat is using the winch reel unit during their daily activities.

The entire project was executed by Marine Systems (from pre-engineering till realization). Following the first successfully tested and delivered winch reel unit, Marine Systems will buildt three more winch reel units in 2025 and maintain the installations until 2040. Maintenance consists of annual preventive maintenance and an extensive maintenance service that takes place one every five years.
